Nobis World – Dominican Republic: Day Two July 14, 2016

The eight of us started our day at the Hummingbird Inn with a fabulous homemade breakfast of fresh fruits, yogurt and granola, eggs and toast, and of course, Dominican coffee.

After breakfast, we traveled to the center and were given a tour.  I was particularly struck and impacted by the strong and influential women presented throughout the center.  The quote that sticks with me the most is:  Anacaona vive dentro de nosotros, porque no la mataron, la multiplicaron.

This was the first thing we talked about on the tour.  I had tears in my eyes.  The sense of empowerment, strength, and possibility was palpable.  Here is a place where mostly women (and a few men) are supporting and educating young girls and young women.

Something that is so simple when you come from the States such as brushing your teeth, is a program at Mariposa.  There’s an oral hygiene program for the girls and our guide was happy to report that the girls see a dentist twice a year and all is well in this department.  Something I definitely take for granted.

After spending some time observing various classes such as art, dance, math, sports, swim, sewing, and reading, the Nobis teachers met with the teachers at Mariposa to hear about the needs and desires of the teachers.  It is our job to reflect on these needs and work with the Mariposa teachers to come up with suggestions and ideas to support in the areas of need.

It was a hugely inspiring day!

Look forward to getting back there tomorrow.
