Exploring Culture & Climate Action

This immersive journey through Louisiana’s Gulf Coast explores the unique cultural heritage, history, and diverse ecosystems of the region. Discover how Indigenous Tribes, Cajun, African, and Creole communities have adapted to and thrived in this dynamic environment for generations. Through engaging activities and firsthand experiences, learn about the deep connections between local communities and the land, as well as their innovative responses to environmental challenges and climate change. This journey offers a chance to connect deeply with the Gulf Coast, learning from its people’s rich histories, diverse traditions, and enduring spirit of innovation. It’s a unique opportunity to engage with the culture, understand the science behind the changing landscapes, and advocate for a sustainable future for our shared planet. 

Program Highlights

  • Exploring Dynamic Landscapes: Traverse bayous, marshes, and deltas to uncover the region’s incredible biodiversity and learn about the ecosystems that support local communities.
  • Cultural Resilience: Understand the impacts of hurricanes like Katrina and Ida and how local communities adapt to challenges like rising sea levels and the oil industry.
  • Language Preservation: Learn about efforts to sustain French and Indigenous languages as vital parts of Louisiana’s cultural identity.
  • Shrimping and Fishing Traditions: Experience the unique methods passed down through generations, adapting to environmental changes while supporting local economies.
  • Cajun Music and Dance: Immerse yourself in the vibrant rhythms of Cajun music and dance, celebrating the region’s rich cultural influences.
  • Contributing to Climate Research or Preservation Initiatives: Participate in data collection, citizen science projects, and/or local preservation efforts to deepen understanding of the region’s climate patterns and support ongoing initiatives to protect Louisiana’s unique ecosystems and cultural heritage.
  • Advocating for Sustainability: Engage in discussions on climate adaptation strategies and explore ways to advocate for the future of this ecologically and culturally rich region.

Field Experience Features

Place-Based Cultural Immersion

Field studies include customized excursions to historic or cultural sites, tours led by community members, meetings with community partners, hands-on engagement activities, and catered meals featuring local cuisine.

Social Justice Activities & Critical Reflection

Social justice and critical reflection activities are incorporated throughout the program. These activities are designed to challenge students to make discoveries about themselves and explore their interconnectedness to the world around them.

Customized Service-Learning

Optional service-learning projects with community partnerships can be incorporated. These projects are designed to deepen student understanding of social justice through reciprocal community partnerships.

Pre-Departure Resources

Teachers receive access to short readings, videos, and reflective assignments to prepare teachers and students before and after travel.

Ongoing support from Nobis Project staff throughout the program design as well as post program.
